 Over 40 % of British men admit to making phone calls in the nude.

Meanwhile, women were more likely to cover up on the blower, with just 27 per cent making naked calls, the Post Office Homephone survey revealed.

A cheeky one in ten of those surveyed revealed they wandered away from the phone during a conversation.

And five per cent of people admitted that they had fallen asleep while on the phone.

Simon Carter, head of Homephone, said the company had carried out the survey to try to find out about how customers used their phones - but were shocked by the results.

"Instead we uncovered some peculiar British eccentricities," Mr Carter said.
